Historically speaking, the roots of "Caritas Moldova" go back to 1991, when the need arose to institutionalize the distribution of humanitarian aid coming to the Republic of Moldova, and I, then parish priest of Chisinau, looking at the experience, although still quite young, of Caritas in the Diocese of Iasi, founded in 1990, I decided to establish a parish institution to help the poor in the capital of Moldova. Thus was born "Caritas Chisinau", which was registered by the state organcle on August 1, 1991. Over time, the scope of activity of the Caritas founded in Chisinau was extended to other communities and cooperation relations were established with Caritas organizations in Italy, Austria and Germany. In November 1992, thanks to the acquisition of a building at 2 Buiucani St., "Caritas Chisinau" was able to develop its structure and, for the first time, opened branches in the parishes of Slobozia Rashcov and Balti. In 1993, the organization acquired its own headquarters on St. Andrew's alley, being guided in its charitable work by its first director, Fr. Stefan Socaciu. The establishment of the Apostolic Administration for the Republic of Moldova on October 28, 1993 facilitated the expansion of the activity of "Caritas" in Chisinau, but in order to coordinate the functioning of "Caritas" in the parishes, it was necessary to set up a centralized structure. And so was born the Catholic Religious Mission "Caritas Moldova", the statute of which I approved as soon as it was presented to me, the new institution being registered by the state bodies on May 10, 1995, a date that has remained to this day to be considered the birthday of "Caritas Moldova" in the years that followed.
The growth of "Caritas Moldova" was due, in addition to the support it has always had from me as bishop, to the people who have been at the helm of the organization over the years: Fr. Stefan Socaciu, Mr. Vladimir Nadkrenicinii, Fr. Alfred Weiss, Fr. Klaus Kniffki, Mrs. Otilia Sirbu, Deacon. Mr. Edgar Vulpe, and today Mr. Edward Lucaci, as well as the whole team, either from the National Office or from the branches in the territory.
Over the years, Caritas Moldova has grown, adapted, diversified its activities and remained faithful to its fundamental values.
"Ubi caritas Deus ibi este - Where there is love there is God". When I think of "Caritas Moldova", these biblically inspired words always come to mind, because they specify so well the mission that His Eminence Anton Coșa entrusted to his/our Foundation 30 years ago, a mission that "Caritas Moldova" is still fulfilling with faith, hope, love and kindness. On the occasion of this beautiful anniversary - let us remember that 30 years ago Jesus Christ, who is the Incarnate Love of the heavenly Father, began his public ministry - I wish the Caritas Moldova Charitable Foundation that the four hearts in its logo may beat in unison with the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, so that divine love incarnate in concrete acts of human kindness may keep the flame of hope and faith burning in the world. Ad multos et faustissimos annos!
Our 30th anniversary is not only a time of celebration, but also a time to reflect and renew our commitment to those in need of support. We continue to strive to be present where the pain is greatest, to turn needs into solutions and to light the light of hope in as many hearts as possible.
In 30 years from now, I see Caritas Moldova as a stronger, more innovative and influential organization, an essential voice in promoting social justice and solidarity. I believe we will continue to be a pillar of support for the most vulnerable, not only locally, but also as part of an international network dedicated to the common good.
I envision Caritas Moldova as a leader in integrated social solutions, combining modern technology with human empathy. I see us expanding our services to meet emerging needs, from climate crisis support to mental health solutions and digital inclusion.
In 30 years, Caritas Moldova will be a catalyst for collaboration, working with communities, governments and international partners to build a better future for all. We will be an organization that not only responds to needs, but anticipates them, educating, inspiring and transforming lives.
Most importantly, I see a Caritas Moldova team united, passionate and guided by fundamental values - love of neighbor, respect for human dignity and commitment to a more just society. It is a path we are traveling together - we, our partners and our beneficiaries - towards a future full of hope and solidarity.
In these 30 years, Caritas Moldova has:
Thank you to all who have been part of this mission: volunteers, donors, partners, colleagues in the Caritas network and all those who believe in the network of good!
