On Palm Sunday we proclaim the Passion of the Lord, and this year we listen to the account of the evangelist Luke. Among the many peculiarities of his text, we can note the three sentences that Jesus uttered during the crucifixion and that we find only in this Gospel.

"When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the malefactors, one on the right and one on the left. Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

They crucified Jesus as he spoke these words; As they nailed him to his wrists and feet, he kept repeating these words. What did he mean? This sentence is the synthesis of our way of believing: we believe that we understand everything, but we do not know what we are doing. We are blind to so many things, and our unconscious arrogance leads us to believe that we have understood everything. We need forgiveness, we who are blinded by our certainties.

The only one present who admits that he is wrong is the robber crucified with him, who finds the way to prayer on the cross: "Jesus, remember me when you come to your kingdom!" And he receives the most beautiful answer: "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise!" That means paradise: to be with him. This is the first man in history that we are certain will be saved, according to Jesus' explicit statement. A robber. He knew how to start from his sin to ask for mercy, he knew how to talk to Jesus. How great is the mercy of God!

And here is the last word, as soon as the iconostasis of the temple breaks: "Father, into your hands I entrust my soul." Behind that iconostasis in the temple, the high priest could utter the immortal name of the God of Israel. Now, the secret has been revealed, and what was hidden has become visible and is shown in this crucified man who continues to trust even the most tragic moment, because the name of that God is "Father".

The Father will resurrect that body, revealing that the way out of anguish is not power, it is not intelligence, it is not possession, but a relationship from the Son to the Father that is realized at the worst possible moment.

But in the end, what does Jesus do on the cross? As man snatches away his life, he offers gifts: he gives forgiveness, he gives Paradise, he gives his soul to the Father.
